Jack Crying Challenge – The Gift – A post “Meridian” story
Jack was surprised to see Carter standing at his door, and he also felt more than a little guilty. Since Daniel had
been lost to them, he had hardly been a shoulder to cry on. Too many years of ‘sucking it up’ had gone into overdrive
this time, he couldn’t handle Carter’s grief, and made non-comforting comments to her about Daniel’s loss. Fact was,
his grief was so overwhelming, he felt useless to help anyone else at this time, so he hoped Carter hadn’t come round
to go into “Let’s talk about Daniel” mode. Maybe she’d come round to chew him out about his attitude, now that, he
could understand.
“Am I disturbing you Sir?” she asked politely. “Nope” he replied. Stepping aside to let her in. “Beer, coffee?” he
asked. “No thank you Sir, I won’t be staying long, I just need to give you this.” She handed him a small package,
beautifully wrapped. “It’s not my birthday Carter!” he said, trying to lighten things. He got a small smile in return,
Carter looked worn out, and it made him feel even more guilty. “Daniel asked me to give you this, when I felt the time
was right.” Hearing Daniel’s name was like a physical pain to him. He looked again at how well the gift was packaged
and was puzzled. “Whilst he was able to speak, he told me exactly what packaging to use, and how to wrap it,
everything else is his.” Jack smiled, typical Daniel, knowing exactly how he wanted a thing to be. Carter stood up.
“I’ll see you tomorrow Sir, thank you for your time.”
“You’re not staying while I open this?” “No Sir, I’ve done my part, this is yours and Daniel’s time.” Jack walked her to
the door. “Carter, I …” he wanted to say something to apologise for being so cold-hearted towards her, but she said
gently “It’s o.k. Sir, we’re all trying to handle this in our own way.” He nodded in thanks, and she was gone.
Jack looked at the package again. The paper was a design of hieroglyphs and he opened it very carefully, trying not
to tear it, because he knew he’d keep it, along with what ever was inside. He saw a small hexagon shaped box, with
ancient writing around the outside “Great Daniel, I’ve not got ancient downloaded into my head at this time, how am I
supposed to….?” He saw an envelope and Daniel’s distinctive handwriting on the front. What must it have cost
Daniel to even try and put pen to paper, when he was in so much pain, and his body was shutting down? Jack
discovered his hands were shaking, as he opened the letter. It read “Jack, the inscription reads, “My friend, My
Brother”. Don’t grieve too much Jack, I’ll be around, thanks for being you, and allowing me to be me”
Daniel. The paper was wet with Jack’s tears, Daniel knew him so well, he wanted to reach him in a special way, to let
him know that their bond was still there, Daniel had given Jack the chance to release his grief, and remember him
always.
Jack settled into bed, the precious box on his bedside table. “Night Daniel” he whispered into the darkness.
